Music at Wesley

Dr. David Chafe has been Music Director of Wesley United Church since 2021, striving to enhance the quality and variety of our music ministry by engaging as many participants as possible. Everyone who wishes to make music at Wesley United is welcome to participate, no matter your musical experience.

Here is how you can participate in music-making at Wesley United Church.

Those Old Time Hymns

Every Sunday morning service is preceded and followed by David at the piano, playing instrumental versions of fabulous, timeless hymn tunes, many of them great old favourites that have been loved for generations. If you have a favourite hymn or gospel song you would like David to play, simply send your request to David and he will gladly add yours to his repertoire. If you are watching and listening from home, our YouTube and FaceBook Live channels go to air about 15 minutes before the start of our services when you can enjoy David’s favourite hymn tunes from the piano. All music titles for the service of the day are posted on the church website under the “Worship/Livestream” tab.

The Wesley Hymn Team

Every Sunday, the main congregational hymns are lead by nearly twenty members of the Wesley Church family who take turns each week, and there is plenty of room for you. If you think you might be comfortable in this important role and would like to join the Wesley Hymn Team, get in touch with David and he and the other hymn leaders will be glad to welcome you. If you join and would like to lead alongside another member of your family or close friend, by all means invite them along. This is a fun, important, and greatly appreciated contribution to our worship and takes very little of your time, just approximately one Sunday every couple of months, plus other special events, depending on the size of our team.

Hearts & Hands

Hearts & Hands is our fast-growing children’s choir and Sunday School group, directed by Annabeth Loveys and Andrea Stowe. Coinciding with the school year and rehearsing Sunday mornings, Hearts & Hands is a lot of fun and open to all children of any musical experience. For more information, contact Annabeth Loveys at annabethloveys@gmail.com.

Solo Singing

Our hearts have been warmed by the eagerness with which several members of our congregation simply want to step up to the front of the church and sing their hearts out. If you have a favourite Christian song you would like to perform, David will be happy to support you at the piano and rehearse with you as many times as you would like. This portion of our weekly worship is called our Ministry of Music, and we welcome your contribution. You do not need to be a trained vocalist or strong reader of music. David is here to help you as much as you would like and to make you feel completely prepared and comfortable.

Hymn Time with David Chafe

Every Wednesday at 7:00pm tune in to Wesley’s YouTube or Facebook channel or David Chafe’s YouTube channel (@davidbchafe) for “Hymn Time with David Chafe,” a short video of a familiar and much-loved hymn tune for singing along or just to listen if you prefer. It’s simply David at the piano offering a quiet few minutes in the middle of each week to relax, reflect, sing and enjoy. All “Hymn Time” videos will remain online for your enjoyment anytime.

Sing the Story - Wesley Gospel Singalongs

On Sunday, October 1st at 7:00pm, join us for our sixth “Sing The Story", a wonderful, heartwarming hour of singalong songs happening right here at Wesley United Church, with David Chafe at the piano and our fabulous hymn team leading great, timeless, familiar gospel tunes we all know and love. Let’s all come together once again in our enjoyable, welcoming and cozy atmosphere of friendship and music. If you are unable to join us in person, you can sing along from home. This event will be broadcast live on VOWR, as well as on our YouTube and Facebook channels where you can sing along to the words on screen. “Sing The Story" is open to all ages, churches and denominations, so share the word and sing out loud! Freewill offerings will be gratefully accepted, with all proceeds to Wesley United Church.

Guest Musicians

Periodically, David invites some of his peers in the professional music industry to come to Wesley as special guest performers. Our church family is always happy to welcome all in the music industry to our sanctuary to share in our worship and to promote their very fine work and upcoming events.

David Chafe, Recording Artist

Since 2006, David has recorded numerous albums mainly of classical and Christian music, as soloist, duet partner, and on recordings of several Newfoundland choirs. To purchase his music, send him a message or see him after a service and he will be glad to speak with you more about his recorded work. You may purchase a CD directly from David, and all of his music is available for download and streaming on major music platforms. Here’s a select list of his solo and duet recordings, with a portion of proceeds in support of Wesley United Church.
